Public Safety Forum

On July 11, the state Division of Communications is having a forum for public safety officials, telecommunication and radio industry professionals, and government officials to review and discuss the draft wireless communications plan. The agenda will cover the proposed functional requirements of a new wireless system, presentations by Nebraska public safety officials, a review of the project organization and timeline, and a discussion of pending issues for the project.

Governor Views Telehealth Demonstration
Governor Johanns visited the Valley County Hospital in Ord on July 13 to view a telehealth demonstration.  

Wanted:  Telecommunications Success Stories
The Docking Institute for Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University is accepting nominations for telecommunications success stories in four categories:   lone eagles, private businesses, community/public entities, and telecommunications companies.   The deadline has been extended to August 15.  

Reports Document Impact
of Information Technology
The U.S. Department of Commerce's report, Digital Economy 2000, states that "the digital economy and digital society are no longer 'emerging.'   They are here."  The report details the tremendous impact of information technology on the economy.  

Measuring the Internet Economy  examines the impact of the Internet on job growth and revenues for four segments of the Internet Economy:  Internet Infrastructure, Internet Network Applications Infrastructure, Internet Intermediaries, and Internet Commerce.    The study was conducted by The University of Texas and Cisco Systems.

Education Infrastructure Inventory Reminder
Reminder to K-12 and higher education that the Division of Communications would like your infrastructure inventory by July 31, 2000.

The next Education Council Meeting will be held July 21, 2000 from 9AM-12PM at the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education, 33rd & Holdrege, in Lincoln.

Government Technology Collaboration Fund Grants
The NITC recently awarded over $389,000 in grant funds for seven information technology projects. Agencies receiving funding included: Nebraska Arts Council; Crime Commission; Dept. of Revenue; University of Nebraska - Lincoln; DAS - IMServices; and Volunteer Service Commission.

Working Groups
Several working groups are underway which may be of interest to state agencies. The topics of these working groups include: Lotus Notes Collaboration; E-mail; Security Architecture; and Network Architecture. For more information click here.
